A once neglected 1½-acre garden that has been lovingly restored over the last 2-yrs. In a beautiful setting beside the R Test, with carriers and large lake next to restored SSSI water meadow, grazed by Welsh Mountain sheep, lambs and Belted Galloway cattle. Riverside walks, species tulips, Japanese prunus, peonies, wisteria collection, roses, bog garden at its best in autumn. Double perennial beds and swamp cypress avenue. Eastern influence incl Japanese Tea House, many different riverside irises and unique bridges.

A 5-acre family garden. 100m long colourful successional herbaceous border set against a flint wall. Well established wild flower meadow with orchids and butterflies. Visitors have been returning to Froyle (The Village of Saints) for 15-yrs to enjoy the wonderful variety of gardens on offer, the warm welcome and the excellent home-made teas in the village hall. The gardens harmonise gently with their surroundings, many with lovely views of beautiful countryside. Six gardens will open their gates this year, not only providing plant interest, colour and scent, but animals frequently associated with a true cottage garden – as well as vegetables, orchards, greenhouses and wild-flower meadows.

Longparish Gardens, nr Andover, Hampshire, SP11 6PS

Longparish is a small beautiful village on R Test with many thatched cottages. Two gardens offer a wide variety of interest. The 2-acre organic and wildlife garden at Longmead House is full of interest with a large, hedged vegetable garden with deep beds, polytunnel, greenhouse, fruit cage and composting area. There are two wildlife ponds and a wild-flower meadow, as well as herbaceous and shrub borders and a woodland walk. Magnificent trees and water are the keys at Lower Mill, a mainly informally planted 15-acre garden on the R Test which delights at every turn. Teardrop-shaped beds are boldly planted with shrubs and underplanted with swathes of grasses and perennials. Harmonious borders around the house lead to a hidden sunken garden and an immaculate water garden. Riverside walks, vegetable garden and wildlife lake await your discovery.

Hinton Ampner, Alresford, Hampshire

12 acres; C20 shrub garden designed by Ralph Dutton. Strong architectural elements using yew and box topiary; spectacular views. Bold effects using simple plants, restrained and dramatic bedding. Orchard with spring wild flowers and bulbs within formal box hedges; magnolia and philadelphus walks. Dell garden made from chalk pit. Shrub rose border dating from 1950s. Walled garden now restored

Stockbridge Gardens, Stockbridge, Hampshire, SO20 6EX

Stockbridge with its many listed houses, excellent shops and pubs is on the famous R Test. Four gardens are open this year offering a variety of styles and character. Tucked in behind the High Street, Trout Cottage’s small walled garden flowers for almost 10 months of the year. Little Wyke, also on the High Street next to the Town Hall, has a long mature town garden with curved mixed borders and fruit trees. The Old Rectory is a mature garden with formal pond and planting near the house and woodland and bog areas bounded by a carrier stream of the R Test. Shepherds House, 50yds E of the White Hart r'about, is a S-facing, ¾-acre garden on rising ground around a Georgian house. Crawley Gardens, nr Winchester, Hampshire

Exceptionally pretty village with thatched houses, C14 church and village pond. A different combination of gardens opens each month from April to July providing seasonal interest from gardens with varied character and style; most gardens benefit from fine country views. Enjoy the spring gardens at Paige Cottage and Gable Cottage, and the 3-acre traditional English country garden at Little Court with carpets of spring bulbs. East Worldham Gardens, East Worldham, Alton, Hampshire, GU34 3AE

A honey-pot of gardens. East Worldham Gardens offers a different combination of gardens with varied characters and styles and far-reaching views on each of the two openings. East Worldham Manor is a walled Victorian garden with restored greenhouses and rose garden. Gravel paths, wind through the garden. The Old Hop Kiln's terraced garden has free-flowing planting which complements the hard landscaping. A waterfall links the upper and lower levels. 'Selborne' has an old orchard providing dappled shade, metal and stone sculptures and mixed borders with a range of hardy geraniums. The garden at Silver Birches, redesigned from an overgrown jungle, offers mixed borders, fishpond, stream, rockery and rose garden. Wyck House's mature garden contains interesting shrubs and trees, roses, perennials, shady area and features a large collection of clematis. Hillseye, opening for the first time, is a mature garden with terrace, coloured themed borders, pergola, pond with fountain and knot garden.
